Description
By the thirteenth century, the Dutch were regularly using windmills to pump water off areas reclaimed from the sea known as polders. The Netherlands' polders have been used for crops, settlements, and ports. The Zuiderzee Works (Dutch: Zuiderzeewerken) is a man-made system of dams and dikes, land reclamation and water drainage work, in total the largest hydraulic engineering project undertaken by the Netherlands during the twentieth century.
